Following on from my previous post, here are a few shots of the poor ashy mining bees that were falling victim to the nefarious bee-fly. Aren’t they gorgeous? The first photo shows a female gingerly poking her head out of her nest burrow. The last two photos shows you why; females are mobbed by males looking for a mate and these balls of bees were pretty full on and pretty intense 😬😅 Once the males have mated they will die leaving the female to lay her eggs and provision the nest. The larvae, providing they’re not eaten by the bee-fly larvae, will overwinter in their burrows and emerge next spring to start all over again. @royentsoc @bbcspringwatch #diptera #hymenoptera #miningbee #ashyminingbee #beefly #insects #insectsofinstagram #insectagram
This morning I had a bloody marvellous time walking around the fields and little wood across from my house. Here are just a few of the things I saw. The video shows a bee-fly (Bombylius major) flicking her eggs into, or near to, the nest burrows of the ashy mining bee. Her larvae, should they find their way into a nest burrow, will devour the mining bee lava and emerge to continue the lifecycle all over again. Ashy mining bees are solitary bees, but, as in this instance, they can nest in the same area forming little colonies (though they are harmless, and do not cooperate with each other as honey bees do). Also featured are: green woodpecker; nuthatch; goldfinch; red kite; more bee-fly; female mandarin duck; male mandarin duck; linnet, and a male kestrel. All in all, a bloody great day 🥳🥳
Today’s garden activity. I’ve grown to really love starlings. Their beautifully iridescent plumage is a joy to see. It was also nice to see a blackbird pecking around in the detritus left by the messy feeding starlings 😅 Dunnocks also enjoy the fallout from the feeders 😊
Is this a) a long since perished dinosaur trying to escape from an old pit of some kind (maybe an old tar pit or quicksand), or b) one in a similar situation, but with its head stuck in the ground? I spent the whole day in the garden today, just me and my camera. There wasn’t a whole lot going on, but I did manage to capture a few nice things. Sharing this to spread a little humour in these shit times. My school is about to close, we have no real idea when anything will return to something resembling normality (though we know it will eventually), and we know there's only more restrictions to come. We need positivity, humour and plain old common sense to help us all though this pandemic. Stay safe people, think of others and be compassionate. X
